2. Battle Setup - Make the Map

When two players decide to fight a campaign battle, the first step is to create the tactical map from the two players' territory types.  Each territory corresponds to half of a tactical map - by placing the two together, a whole tactical map is formed which lasts just for the length of the game.  (If you're playing a multiplayer battle with more than one army per side, then each side can pick one player's territory.  The TSC can't currently handle three-sided battles.)

These are tactical map halves corresponding to the nine terrain types:

Badlands

Desert

Forest

Hills

Islands

Mountains

Plains

Snow

Swamp

There are nine colours of hexes, corresponding to the nine types of terrain:

  • Badlands (Medium Brown)
  • Desert (Light Brown)
  • Forest  (Green)
  • Hills (Greyish Green)
  • Islands (Blue)
  • Mountains (Dark Grey)
  • Plains (Pale Green)
  • Snow (White)
  • Swamps (Dark Brown)

Take the two terrain maps and place their open edges together to form the whole tactical map for the game.  A Swamp map half and a Mountain map half, for example, come together like this:

Mountains

Swamp

This produces a tactical game map with a fortress at each end, and eight villages nestled in the lands in between, each army owning the four nearest to its fortress.
